FLOOD RISK ALERT & INSURANCE PREPAREDNESS ADVISORY
Advisory to Imana Insurance Clients and Business Partners,
Imana Insurance Agency Kenya Ltd wishes to alert clients and business partners to the increased likelihood of wetter-than-normal conditions during the October–December 2026 rainfall season.
Regional climate forecasts indicate that El Niño conditions have developed and may strengthen during the remainder of the year, while other regional climate factors may also support increased rainfall across parts of East Africa.
This may increase the risk of:
- Flash floods and river flooding
- Water damage to buildings, stock, machinery and equipment
- Motor vehicle damage
- Business interruption
- Supply-chain and transport disruption
- Landslides in vulnerable areas
- Increased property, motor, engineering, agricultural and liability losses
What We Recommend You Do Now
1. Protect Your Property and Assets
Move stock, machinery, vehicles, important documents and other valuable assets away from areas that are vulnerable to flooding.
Where possible, raise stock and equipment above expected flood levels and avoid storing critical assets directly on floors in low-lying areas.
2. Review Your Insurance Cover
Check whether your current insurance adequately protects you against flood-related losses.
For businesses, particular attention should be given to:
- Fire & Allied Perils / Property Insurance
- Flood extension
- Business Interruption Insurance
- Machinery and equipment cover
- Motor Insurance
- Goods in Transit Insurance
- Contractors All Risk and Engineering Insurance
- Agriculture Insurance, where applicable
Please remember that flood cover may not automatically apply under every policy.
3. Check Your Sums Insured
Review the values declared under your insurance policies, including:
- Buildings
- Stock
- Machinery
- Office equipment
- Vehicles
- Business contents
- Other insured assets
Outdated or understated values may result in underinsurance and could affect the amount payable following a claim.
4. Inspect Your Premises
Before the rains intensify, consider:
- Clearing gutters and drainage systems
- Inspecting roofs and waterproofing
- Testing drainage pumps
- Checking retaining walls
- Protecting electrical systems
- Securing outdoor equipment
- Identifying areas where flood water could enter your premises
Preventive action can significantly reduce the severity of a loss.
5. Keep Your Claims Records Ready
Maintain updated copies of:
- Asset registers
- Stock records
- Purchase invoices
- Valuation reports
- Insurance schedules
- Financial records
- Photographs and videos of insured property
Where possible, keep copies in secure cloud or off-site storage.
6. Inform Us of Any Changes
Please notify Imana if there have been material changes to your:
- Business location
- Operations
- Stock levels
- Asset values
- Machinery
- Buildings
- Vehicle use
- Flood exposure
This allows us to assess whether your current policy still matches your actual risk.
7. Monitor Official Weather Alerts
We encourage all clients to continue following weather and flood alerts issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department, ICPAC, county governments and relevant national disaster-management agencies.
Review Your Insurance Before the Rains
Do not wait until a flood occurs to discover that your insurance cover is inadequate.
Imana Insurance Agency Kenya Ltd can assist you to:
- Review your existing insurance policies
- Confirm whether flood risks are covered
- Compare insurance quotations
- Identify possible insurance gaps
- Review sums insured
- Arrange additional cover where necessary
- Guide you through the claims process in the event of a loss
In the event of flood or storm damage, take reasonable steps to prevent further loss, preserve evidence and notify Imana as soon as reasonably practicable so that we can assist with the claims notification process.
This advisory is provided for preventive risk-management purposes and does not replace the specific terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and warranties contained in your insurance policy.
Prepare early. Protect your assets. Review your cover.
