Duty-Free Vehicle Insurance Kenya | Expat Car Cover

Compare duty-free vehicle insurance in Kenya for diplomats, expatriates and eligible organizations. Review valuation, duty exposure and claims terms.

Duty-free vehicle insurance in Kenya requires careful handling because the vehicle’s customs status can affect documentation, valuation and total-loss discussions. Diplomats, expatriates, international organizations and other eligible persons should not assume an ordinary private-car quotation automatically addresses every duty-free issue.

Imana helps eligible vehicle owners compare comprehensive and third-party quotations and clarify the documents that insurers may require.

What “duty-free vehicle” means for insurance

Duty-free status relates to customs and tax privileges granted under the applicable law and approval process. It does not mean the vehicle is exempt from motor insurance. A vehicle used on the road still requires the legally applicable third-party protection, while comprehensive cover may be selected for broader protection.

Insurance and customs are separate systems. The insurer assesses the insurable vehicle risk; KRA and other authorities determine customs obligations.

Comprehensive and third-party options

Third-party cover addresses liability to other road users and does not ordinarily pay for damage to the insured duty-free vehicle. Comprehensive cover may protect against accidental damage, theft and fire, subject to policy wording and special conditions.

Because imported and specialized vehicles may have higher parts and repair costs, compare valuation, excess, repair arrangements, tracking requirements and availability of parts.

Valuation and customs status

The insurer may require a valuation that identifies the vehicle’s market value and relevant duty status. Ask how the sum insured is determined and whether the policy schedule records the vehicle as duty-free.

A total-loss settlement may require coordination of insurance, ownership and customs information. The handling of unpaid duty or disposal restrictions should be clarified with the insurer and the relevant authority rather than assumed.

Documents that may be requested

Common insurance documents include the passport or identification of the owner, KRA PIN where applicable, logbook or ownership records, import documents, exemption or diplomatic documents and a valuation. The exact list depends on status and insurer.

KRA separately publishes requirements for diplomatic and first-arrival privileges. Keep customs approval and vehicle records current.

Cross-border travel and COMESA

Expatriates and diplomats often travel within the region. Kenyan motor insurance does not automatically replace the liability requirements of every destination. A COMESA Yellow Card may be needed for participating countries, together with any other required documents.

Confirm the travel route, countries and dates before departure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a duty-free car get comprehensive insurance?

Yes, subject to insurer acceptance, valuation, documentation and policy terms.

Is third-party insurance still required?

Yes. Duty-free customs status does not remove the road-use insurance requirement.

Will insurance pay customs duty after a total loss?

Treatment varies and must be clarified in writing with the insurer and relevant authority. Do not assume unpaid duty is automatically included.

What documents are needed?

Insurers may request ownership, passport or ID, KRA PIN, customs or exemption documents, import records and valuation.

Can Imana arrange COMESA Yellow Card too?

Yes. Provide the countries and travel dates so the applicable option can be confirmed.
